Life Story

By God's grace, both of my parents came to faith in Christ in their 20s. As a result, they were dedicated to raising my siblings and I to love the Lord, obey His Word and be active in the life of our local church. My mom tells me that I prayed to receive Christ when I was 3 years old, and while I don’t recall that prayer, I cannot remember a time when I did not know the name of Jesus or acknowledge the existence of God.

Acknowledging God’s existence is far from having a saving faith in Jesus, however. Despite my parent’s discipleship efforts, my elementary years were marked by active rebellion against my parents, disdain toward our church and attraction to sin. Because of a significant trial given to our family, I harbored a great deal of anger and bitterness toward my parents and the church. Though I would not have been able to articulate it then, I can now say that I did not acknowledge my sin or my need for a Savior. I did not believe the gospel.

When I entered middle school, God began a work in my heart. I experienced real healing from my anger toward my parents, but my apathy toward Christ and bitterness toward His Church persisted. Later, God brought a youth pastor into my life who invested significant time into cultivating a discipleship relationship with me. His loving sacrifice of time and energy led to a transformation in my heart. By the end of 8th grade, I recognized my great need for salvation and became committed to following Christ.

This transformation changed the trajectory of my life. The Lord continued to cultivate my desire for holiness and passion for serving Him. He has led me on through high school, Bible college, marriage, fatherhood, seminary and pastoral leadership in the local church, all the while shaping and sanctifying me through His Word, the conviction of the Spirit and the gift of Christian community. It is my earnest ambition to surrender my will to His as I press on toward the goal in Christ Jesus, so that I might decrease and He might increase.

Before coming to The Village, I served as the worship pastor for a church in Michigan. I’m married to Dana—my best friend and high school sweetheart—and we have three children.

Hope for The Village Church

My hope for The Village is that God would continue to graciously bless this faith family with an overflowing measure of His Spirit. I pray that the men and women of this church might know the Lord and worship Him with lives that are submitted to Scripture, centered on the gospel and sent into the world to proclaim His excellencies with compassion, humility and boldness.
